coaching: Variations
Many coaches contact the good Guru asking for examples of simple variations (always the best ones) that they can bring into their game. Here are a couple that have been used very recently in Provincial, Club and School matches.

coaching: Guru in Action: Close to the Line
The Guru regularly gets asked questions on playing and coaching. He replies to each one in detail.  Here is a sample of the Guru in Action.

coaching: Playing in the wet

And staying positive!

All coaches will agree that in the wet you must observe basics:

coaching: Front row play

The Three Ts

THE GAME WITHIN A GAME

The mighty prop forward - the unsung hero of rugby past and present.

coaching: Lock Forwards

What he needs to be

Sensibly my friend declined to do this for me for he felt he had, as I have, been too long out of the game.  But he has a son at university who is well qualified to tell us something about locks. His information is largely statistical, though.

coaching: A Plea for a Deeper Backline Alignment
Backline play has most to do with postioning. The modern game has reduced postioning options, whereas greater variety would produce freer rugby.

coaching: The hooker's game

The way they do things

Guru writes: "During my long career as a coach I have come across many good hookers but none as good as the one I have asked to write this article on the position. There is not one International side in the world for which he could not have played."

coaching: The Demands of Rugby

Set the spirit free

Most International rugby sides are playing a brand of rugby that has little space in it for individual decision-making, flair and instinctive skill. Games are plotted and manufactured in offices by statisticians and video analysts and then players are instructed in detail and choreographed, moulded, so that automaton-like, in almost hypnotic state, they march to instructions, or should I say orders?

coaching: Line-out ploys

Make it fun

He speaks:

I have often pondered on the name ‘line-out’. What a drab and innocuous name for perhaps the most important structured facet of the modern game, and potentially one of the most stirring arenas of competition.

coaching: Homeostasis

The Guru gets psychological

It is a fact that when a person is in a position of comfort he will produce little for he is content.
