Daniel Geurs appointed Men's 1XV Head Coach for 2026/27
A Sydney-born coach with twelve years in the Shute Shield, two in the Netherlands and a stint with Singapore's national team takes the 1st XV from July.
AAC has named Daniel Geurs as Men’s 1st XV Head Coach for the 2026/27 season, a Sydney-born Australian with Dutch ancestry, joining from a coaching career that spans Sydney’s Shute Shield, the Netherlands and Singapore.
His CV reads as twelve years in the Shute Shield (Sydney’s highly competitive top club competition), with two further years coaching in the Netherlands, plus a stint in Singapore working with both a local club and the national team. He arrives at AAC having coached across rugby league and rugby union.
The appointment lands at a period of real growth for the club. The 1st XV returned to the Ereklasse in 2023–24 and held its top-division status this season; the 2nd XV has just secured a fourth straight promotion, winning a 20–17 play-off away to RFC Gouda on 17 May; and the women’s side defends a national title at the end of May. AAC’s Director of Rugby, Gary Jefferies, framed the move as a natural next step:
“Daniel is exactly the next step AAC Rugby Amsterdam needs to continue our excellent recent successes. His high-level experience, exciting vision of rugby, and infectious drive will allow us to continue on our growth trajectory.”
Geurs’s own words on the appointment:
“It is an honour to join the nation’s capital and build on the strong foundations already laid by the board and technical committee. I’m looking forward to getting on the field for the first training session in July.”
He joins a 1XV coaching staff that retains Chris Redmond and is managed by Stephen Bushnell. Above the team coaches sits the Director-of-Rugby role under Gary Jefferies, supported on the Technical Committee by Barbarian and former club chairman George de Vries. The 2XV is led by head coach Jim Crick, with Edward Good as assistant coach.
Player recruitment for 2026/27 is open. Senior men interested in playing under the new staff can email info@aacrugby.com or write to Gary Jefferies directly at g.jefferies@aacrugby.com. Pre-season starts in July at Sportpark De Eendracht.
